그가 매달린 교수대는 타우 십자가를 이루고, 다리의 위치는 만자(卍) 모양의 십자가(fylfot cross)를 이룬다. 순교자로 보이는 인물의 머리 주위에는 후광이 있다.
다음 사항을 눈여겨보아야 한다. (1) 희생의 나무는 살아 있는 나무이며 잎이 달려 있다. (2) 얼굴은 고통이 아니라 깊은 황홀을 표현한다. (3) 인물 전체는 정지된 상태의 생명을 암시하지만, 죽음이 아니라 생명이다.
이 카드는 깊은 의미를 지니지만, 그 의미는 모두 베일에 가려져 있다. 편집자 중 한 사람은 레비가 그 의미를 몰랐다고 말한다. 그것은 의심할 여지가 없으며, 편집자 자신도 몰랐다.
이 카드는 순교의 카드, 신중함의 카드, 대작업의 카드, 의무의 카드라고 잘못 불려 왔다. 그러나 출판된 해석을 모두 소진해도 허영만을 발견할 뿐이다.
내 입장에서는 아주 단순하게 말하겠다. 이 카드는 신적인 것과 우주의 관계를 그 여러 측면 중 하나로 표현한다. 자신의 더 높은 본성에 관한 이야기가 이 상징 안에 묻혀 있다는 것을 이해할 수 있는 사람은 가능한 위대한 각성에 관한 암시를 받게 될 것이다. 또한 죽음이라는 성스러운 신비 뒤에 영광스러운 부활의 신비가 있다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.

XII The Hanged Man
The gallows from which he is suspended forms a Tau cross, while the figure--from the position of the legs--forms a fylfot cross. There is a nimbus about the head of the seeming martyr. It should be noted (1) that the tree of sacrifice is living wood, with leaves thereon; (2) that the face expresses deep entrancement, not suffering; (3) that the figure, as a whole, suggests life in suspension, but life and not death. It is a card of profound significance, but all the significance is veiled. One of his editors suggests that Éliphas Lévi did not know the meaning, which is unquestionable nor did the editor himself. It has been called falsely a card of martyrdom, a card of prudence, a card of the Great Work, a card of duty; but we may exhaust all published interpretations and find only vanity. I will say very simply on my own part that it expresses the relation, in one of its aspects, between the Divine and the Universe. He who can understand that the story of his higher nature is imbedded in this symbolism will receive intimations concerning a great awakening that is possible, and will know that after the sacred Mystery of Death there is a glorious Mystery of Resurrection.
